Description
Various lookout points on the path up Gellert Hill in Budapest Hungary are great places to sit and watch the ebb and flow of city life. The boats on the Danube, the cars, the trams, the people, all weaving the fabric of daily life in Budapest. This view takes in the Great Market Hall, the building with the conical turrets on either side of the entrance. The roof is covered with Zsolnay tiles made with special processes to make them frost resistant. The Great Market Hall was built in 1896 for the millennial celebrations, and was refurbished at the end of the 20th century. It is now a popular place to buy local produce, meats, cheeses, patries, breads, spices, Hungarian handicrafts and souvenirs. In front of the market is a busy tram stop for many trams crossing to and from the Pest (east) side to the Buda (west) side of the Danube over the Liberty Bridge seen on the far right.
